The Lernaean Hydra was a serpentine water monster in Greek mythology. Its lair was the lake of Lerna. It possessed many heads the exact number of which varies according to the source. The Hydra also was able to regenerate its heads, for every head chopped off, the Hydra would regrow a couple of new ones. In addition, it had poisonous breath and blood so virulent that even its scent was deadly.
Hercules fired flaming arrows into the Hydra's lair, to force it to come out. He then attacked with his sword. The weakness of the Hydra was that one of its heads was mortal. Hercules was able to discover the mortal head and decapitated the beast.
